Current Undergraduate Students

Eligible students may start with steps below to apply for federal student aid. Student aid eligibility will help inform state and institutional aid funding options. International Affairs can assist international students with funding resources.

Temple University’s FAFSA code is 003371.

Step 1: Retrieve Your FSA ID

If you need to retrieve your federal student aid (FSA) ID, go to studentaid.gov and use the “Forgot Username” and/or “Forgot Password” options to retrieve your information.

If your account is locked, then you will need to contact the Department of Education for assistance in retrieving your information. This may take several days or weeks, so you should file early to ensure you meet the Feb. 1 priority deadline.

Step 2: Submit Your FAFSA

You can submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the upcoming academic year to Temple University using school code 003371.

  • You should submit the FAFSA prior to Temple University’s priority deadline of Feb. 1.
  • The FAFSA for the upcoming academic year opens in the fall.
  • You may need to complete additional requirements—monitor TUportal and your Temple email for information.
Step 3: Monitor TUportal

After completing your FAFSA, Student Financial Services will receive the application for processing.

  1. To monitor the progress, sign into TUportal.
  2. Click on the the Costs and Aid tab.
  3. You can review financial aid requirements within the SFS channel on the Costs and Aid tab.

Your financial aid offer will be an estimate until all financial aid requirements are complete. Some requirements prevent students from receiving a financial aid offer, or the financial aid offer may change once required documentation has been processed.

Step 4: Submit Your Financial Aid Offer Decisions

Once issued, you can accept your financial aid offer via TUportal. Currently enrolled students will typically receive a financial aid offer for the upcoming academic year in mid to late June. All financial aid requirements must be complete, and students must be enrolled for the upcoming fall semester, to receive their financial aid offer. To access the financial aid offer,

  1. sign in to TUportal,

  3. click on Financial Aid Package,
  4. follow the prompts to review the financial aid information, and
  5. in the Accept Award tab, submit your decision to accept or decline federal student loans or federal work-study grant funding offered to them. Scholarships and grants are automatically accepted and require no further action on TUportal.

Please note: Unless you are admitted for the spring semester, all aid is split in half between the fall and spring semesters.

Step 5: Apply For Any Additional Loan (Optional)

Students may need additional loan funding to cover their education-related expenses. Students may utilize additional loans up to the full cost of attendance outlined on the financial aid offer.

  • PLUS loan: Parents of dependent undergraduate students have the option to apply for a federal Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS loan).

  • Students enrolled in less than full-time status may see a delay in PLUS loan or private loan disbursement.
  • Changes to enrollment status (full time, part time, etc.) after your financial aid disburses can result in adjustments to your financial aid. This may result in returning funds back to Temple University.
  • Contact Student Financial Services counselor to discuss the impact a change in enrollment status may have on your financial aid eligibility.

Review Your Financial Aid

There are limits to the amount of federal student loan and grant funding you can receive.

  • Check the aggregate total federal student loan funding borrowed, as this can affect future federal student loan eligibility. If you are unsure of how much you have previously borrowed in federal loans, log into studentaid.gov to view your federal student loan totals.
  • The federal Pell Grant and PA State Grant also have lifetime usage limitations. Pell Grant or PA State Grant funding you received at a prior institution may affect the amount of remaining grant eligibility you have to finance your degree at Temple University.
