Summer Enrollment

The academic year at Temple University begins with the fall semester followed by the spring semester, and ends with summer sessions. The summer is considered a “trailer” for the majority of undergraduate and graduate programs at the university. This includes offers of summer work-study—see below for details related to the dates students can work over the summer.

Summer 2023 financial aid eligibility is determined based on the information from the 2022–2023 FAFSA application and remaining fiscal year funding.  For summer, the 2022–2023 FAFSA must be submitted by June 30, 2023.

Summer financial aid will be limited if you have already used your eligibility during the fall 2022 and spring 2023 semesters. Summer Pell funding cannot be awarded to student accounts until early May. 

In order to be considered for summer financial aid, you must meet the federal and university aid eligibility requirements. Important: A student’s satisfactory academic progress (SAP) status is reviewed after spring grades are posted and can impact summer financial aid eligibility. These determinations may occur during summer terms. Do to the condensed nature of summer sessions, we cannot guarantee a SAP review prior to the end of summer add/drop sessions.

Students that complete a degree program (i.e., graduate) and then enroll in summer classes as a nondegree student will not qualify for summer financial aid. 

Students enrolled for the summer session(s) that have the 2022–2023 FAFSA on file with Temple University will be reviewed for all forms of available financial aid. Summer financial aid is limited and will be awarded to students on a first-come, first-processed basis.

Summer Financial Aid Applications
  1. Registered undergraduate students will be reviewed for summer financial aid eligibility in late April based on summer term enrollment. There is no undergraduate summer financial aid application.
  2. Summer work-study grant students who should be registered for summer and/or fall 2023 courses should
    • have both the 2022–2023 and 2023–2024 FAFSAs on file, 
    • demonstrate unmet financial need per the FAFSA, and
    • have a summer work-study position at Temple University or an approved off-campus location.
  3. They can then email  to request summer work-study.
Summer Financial Aid Eligibility Checklist
  1. Completed 2022–2023 FAFSA must be on file with Temple University listed in the school section of the FAFSA. Temple’s federal school code is 003371.
  2. Review the Bursar’s Office tuition calculator for cost information pertaining to summer registration and the summer billing schedule.
  3. Eligible nonmatriculated students should complete the Non-Matriculated form and return to SFS.
  4. Monitor your financial aid award on Self-Service Banner, accessed via TUportal, for notification of summer financial aid eligibility.
  5. Accept or Decline any federal loan funding on your financial aid award within Self-Service Banner. NOTE: New federal loan borrowers must complete the Entrance Counseling and Master Promissory Note requirements at studentaid.gov. You can access this website with your federal student aid ID.
  6. Report all changes in summer enrollment to the Student Financial Services office. Changes in enrollment will directly impact your summer financial aid award and may result in cancellation of summer aid if you drop below half time.
  7. Students who do not enroll in summer courses and have a summer work-study position at Temple University or an approved off-campus location must meet the following qualifications. They can then email  to request summer work-study.
    1. Be pre-registered for fall 2023,
    2. have both the 2022–2023 and 2023–2024 FAFSAs on file, and
    3. complete all 2023–2024 outstanding requirements (such as verification).
  8. Students who only enroll in the four-week summer session may not qualify for financial aid.
  9. Students who only enroll in a two-week summer session will not qualify for financial aid.
Summer Enrollment Requirements
  1. For additional federal Pell Grant funding under year-round Pell, an undergraduate student must be enrolled in at least six (6) credits over the course of summer. This can be any combination of enrollment as long as the total summer enrollment is at least six credits.
  2. For a federal Direct Loan, a student must be registered at least half time during summer in a six- or 12-week session.
    1. Half-time enrollment is defined as follows.
      1. Graduate students: 4.5 credits in either summer session OR 2.25 credits for summer session I and 2.25 credits for summer session II
      2. Undergraduate students: Six credits in either summer session OR three credits for summer session I and three credits for summer session II
  3. For Federal Work-study, a student must be registered during summer session OR pre-registered for fall 2023 (see below for more information).
  4. For Pennsylvania State Grant funding, an undergraduate student must be registered at least half time (six credits) AND attend a minimum of five (5) weeks in a degree-granting program.

NOTE- Students who revise their summer enrollment after their summer financial aid has been processed are required to notify SFS because it may affect your summer financial aid eligibility including your ability to participate in the Federal Work-study program.
