Temple University, Japan Campus

As a Temple University student, you can either study on short-term study abroad programs through the study abroad office located on Main Campus in Philadelphia, or attend Temple Japan as an admitted student in Tokyo, Japan. Students are admitted directly through Temple Japan in Tokyo and referred to as TUJ students or Japan admitted (JA), whereas short-term study abroad students are always referred to as study abroad students. This page contains information for students who are enrolling at Temple Japan, not students attending a study abroad. Temple University, Japan Campus (TUJ) students will communicate primarily with the Office of Student Services located in Tokyo, Japan and the Main Campus Student Financial Services office will work with the Office of Student Services to process financial aid awards for all TUJ students. TUJ students and parents make all tuition payments directly to the TUJ bursar’s office in Tokyo, Japan.

NOTE: All TUJ students should email financial aid inquiries (include full name and TUid) to  (TUJ financial aid coordinator) and  (Main Campus SFS office). When in doubt, include both email addresses on the inquiry.

Undergraduate TUJ Student Financial Aid

Financial Aid Process
  • All U.S. citizens and eligible noncitizens interested in federal financial aid should file the FAFSA with the Temple University’s federal school code: 003371 and list housing status as “off campus”.
    • If federal income taxes aren’t complete when filing the FAFSA, filers should indicate their tax filing status as “will file” and input estimated income/assets figures. Once the federal income taxes are complete the filer is responsible to access the completed FAFSA online and make the appropriate corrections to revise the income/asset figures as well as the tax filing status to “complete”.
  • Accepted TUJ students will receive an AccessNet Username and TUsecure password in order to access the TUportal which contains all student account information as well as access to TUmail (official method of communication by the University). TUJ students should regularly review the TUportal for the financial aid awards, award updates and online and/or documentation requirements.
    • The Main Campus Student Financial Services office will review all completed FAFSA applications and process financial aid awards. The financial aid award notification will be sent to the student’s TUmail account requesting they review the award in the TUportal.
    • Students selected for the federal verification process must upload their financial aid requirements in the TUportal. Information on financial aid requirements and eligibility can be viewed in the Eligibility Determination section of this website. 
    • New Federal Direct loan borrowers must complete a Master Promissory Note and Entrance Interview at StudentAid.gov.
Financial Aid Eligibility

To receive and retain student financial aid, including the Federal Direct and PLUS Loans, undergraduate, graduate and professional students must meet certain eligibility requirements. TUJ matriculated students that file the FAFSA will be considered for PA state (Pennsylvania residents) and U.S. federal financial aid.

  2. Complete the Non-Matriculated Student Loan Eligibility Request form then email to 
  3. Private Student Alternative Loan - students must research to ensure the private student loan will approve for non-degree seeking students.
Receiving Financial Aid
  • Financial aid awards are listed in the Financial Aid section of the Self-Service Banner (SSB) student account within the TUportal. The semester financial aid awards are scheduled by the Main Campus SFS office to apply to a student account a few days before the semester begins per U.S. federal government regulation for all students. The semester awards will apply to the student’s Main Campus account and are then wired to the TUJ Bursar student account.
  • All TUJ students should be financially prepared because the process of moving financial aid awards from the Main Campus to the TUJ Bursar can take time.
    • TUJ recommends that all students have enough personal resources to cover books, transportation, school and personal supplies while waiting for the financial aid disbursement. 
  • The TUJ Bursar will apply the financial aid disbursement to the student account and then notify students via email that are receiving a financial aid refund. The TUJ Bursar’s current policy is to complete a wire transfer to a student’s local bank account in Japan or issue a cash refund. TUJ students should contact the TUJ Bursar office directly regarding this process, .

Graduate TUJ Student Financial Aid

Financial Aid Process
  • At Temple Japan, the Graduate College of Education offers a master’s program in TESOL (teaching English to speakers of other languages) and a doctoral program in applied linguistics. Students interested in these programs must contact TUJ Graduate College of Education directly.
  • At Temple Japan, the Fox School of Business offers the Fox MBA with an executive concentration. Students interested in this program must contact the TUJ Fox School of Business directly.
  • All U.S. citizens and eligible noncitizens interested in U.S. federal financial aid should file the FAFSA with the Temple University’s federal school code (003371) and list housing status as “off campus.”
  • Graduate students must apply for the Graduate PLUS loan separately on studentaid.gov, and be sure to notify  of the approved loan amount.

Students may use their beterans benefits at TUJ. TUJ is listed under the same veteran’s approval as Temple University Main Campus. TUJ students should review the TUJ website for more information on the application process for the veteran’s benefits.
